GymStar
GymStar is a statewide structured gymnastic programme for boys and girls. There are 6 levels for gymnasts to work through. Gymnasts have the option of entering fun, participation-based competitions run by GymStar.
Classes run most weeknights after school. There are also beginner programmes on Saturday mornings for both girls and boys.
How does it work?
Each class (up to 8 gymnasts) has a dedicated coach, and sometimes an assistant coach. The gymnasts learn skills for 6 apparatus, including beam, bars, vault, floor, rings and p-bars. At Whitehorse, GymStars also learn rhythmic/hand apparatus skills. Gymnasts have 'star sheets', which the coaches complete as the gymnasts master new skills. When all the skills are completed, we know that the gymnast is ready to move to the next level.
GymStars who show promise on relevant apparatus are able to move into the competitive streams if they wish, or they can progress through the GymStar levels. Club staff are happy to advise on appropriate clases for their gymnasts.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes which will not catch are fine for GymStar. T-shirt and shorts/track pants/leggings are ideal. Gymnasts may wear leotards if they wish, and these are required for competitions (boys wear club t-shirts and shorts). Barefoot is best, and gymnasts should make sure they bring a water bottle to each class. Hair should always be tied back, and jewellery is not permitted in the gym.
Are the coaches qualified?
All our coaches are accredited with Gymnastics Australia and complete annual skills updating. Many classes also have an assistant coach, one of our senior gymnasts who is developing their coaching skills ahead of the accreditation process.
How do I join?
Email or phone our office to book a trial class. Availability for some classes is limited, but we do keep waiting lists if necessary.
Can I get involved?
Parent support is very welcome: You can get involved as an assistant coach, as a judge, or as a parent helper at competitions, events or around the club. Speak to the office staff for more details.
